  • Lebanese Islamist group

Islamic Resistance (al-Muqawama al-Islamiya) is a Lebanese Islamist group consisting of almost 5,000 members. It was originally composed of both Shi'i and Sunni fighters who represented virtually all Muslim militant organizations, but Shi'i fighters began to assert themselves as the group’s major combatants over time. The group was established after the Israeli invasion of 1982, when it fought a guerrilla war against Israel. In 1985, Islamic Resistance became the combat arm of the terrorist group Hezbollah.

This profile is adapted from the article “Islamism in Lebanon: A Guide to the Groups,” written by A. Nizar Hamzeh and published by Middle East Forum in September 1997.
