Association of Muslim Clergy (AMC)

Overview

* Lebanese Islamist group formed in 1982

The Association of Muslim Clergy (AMC) is a Lebanese Islamist organization consisting of almost 200 members. Led by two activist sheikhs, Mahir Hammud (a Sunni) and Zuhayr Kanj (a Shi’a), this group seeks to promote Muslim unity. The Association represents a coalition of militant clerics who share the late Iranian Ayatollah Khomeini‘s ideals as well as a determination to fight Israel and to establish an Islamic order in Lebanon. AMC was founded by Sunni and Shi’i leaders in response to the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, when the Jewish state sought to put an end to the repeated terrorist attacks that had been launched against it by the Palestine Liberation Organization.
