Palestine Media Center (PMC)

Overview

* Palestinian news outlet that offers propagandistic accounts of all pertinent stories relating to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

The Palestine Media Center (PMC) was established in 2001 by Palestine National Authority Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Yasser Abed Rabbo. According to its mission statement, PMC was formed “to provide a reliable and professional media source that will cater the media with accurate, timely, and informative news relevant to the Palestinian reality.”

PMC presents news stories involving the Arab-Israeli conflict in a manner that depicts Israel as a tyrannical oppressor of innocent, peace-seeking Palestinians. The organization commonly characterizes Israeli military actions targeting specific terrorists as acts of “manslaughter” and “murder,” but classifies Palestinian suicide bombers as “activists.”

PMC produces Daily Situation Reports on various issues in “the Occupied Territories.” These reports quantify the number of allegedly unjustified deaths, assaults, injuries, arrests, air attacks, raids, detentions, house demolitions, checkpoint conflicts, road closures, and incidents of property destruction or confiscation for which Israeli authorities are responsible each day. The reports also provide updates on Israel’s progress in building the anti-terror separation barrier (which PMC terms an “Apartheid Wall”) in the West Bank.

The consistently anti-Israel tone of PMC’s reports was displayed in a November 5, 2006 article titled “PLO condemns the bloody attacks against Gaza,” which read, in part, as follows: “The Israeli military forces … are escalating … vicious attacks on the town of Beit Hanon and the surroundings. … Witnesses add that massive destructions for [sic] the infrastructure, houses and mosques in the neighborhoods are still ongoing. … The Israeli troop’s [sic] immoral crimes would [sic] only help to drag the region towards more violence and instability.” This article was composed by the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Department of Arab and International Relations.

A November 30, 2006 PMC article, titled “Israelis adopt what South Africa dropped,” stated the following: “Many aspects of Israel ‘s occupation surpass those of the apartheid regime. Israel’s large-scale destruction of Palestinian homes, leveling of agricultural lands, military incursions and targeted assassinations of Palestinians far exceed any similar practices in apartheid South Africa. No wall was ever built to separate blacks and whites. … And the United States and the European Union … have in effect imposed economic sanctions on the Palestinian people for having, by democratic means, elected a [Hamas-led] government deemed unacceptable to Israel and the West. … In these circumstances, the United States should not be surprised if the rest of the world begins to lose faith in its commitment to human rights.”

PMC also posted an October 29, 2006 article titled “Israel’s scandalous siege of Gaza,” which said: ““Israel has killed 2,300 Gazans over the past six years … How long will the “international community” allow the slaughter to continue? The cruel repression of the occupied territories, and of Gaza in particular, is one of the most scandalous in the world today. It is the blackest stain on Israel’s patchy record as a would-be democratic state. … Far from reining in the Israeli hawks, messianic settlers, Arab-killers and expansionists, [President] Bush gave them a completely free hand — and continues to do so.”

PMC receives funding from the European Union.
