RadioNation (RN)

Overview

* Weekly hour-long syndicated radio show produced by The Nation Institute
* Airs on more than 130 radio stations in North America and worldwide via shortwave Radio for Peace International

RadioNation is a weekly, hour-long, syndicated radio program hosted by Laura Flanders, a journalist whose writing has appeared in The Nation, In These Times, The Progressive, Ms. Magazine, Tompaine.com, and ZNet. Flanders also hosts The Laura Flanders Show, which is heard weekends on Air America Radio, and for more than ten years she produced and hosted CounterSpin, a nationally syndicated radio program for Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting. Before Flanders took over the microphone at RadioNation, the show was hosted by Marc Cooper, Contributing Editor of The Nation magazine.

RadioNation is “a project of the non-profit Nation Institute,” a tax-exempt entity closely linked with the for-profit Nation magazine. The program originated in March 1995 on KPFK-FM (90.7) in Los Angeles, a Pacifica Radio station that also airs the anti-Semitic Afrika Mental Liberation Weekend. RadioNation’s frequent guests include The Nation magazine’s Editor Katrina vanden Heuvel, publisher/Editorial Director Victor Navasky, National Affairs Correspondent William Greider, Washington Editor David Corn, columnists Naomi Klein and Patricia J. Williams, Contributing Editor Robert Scheer, Editorial Board members Frances FitzGerald and Tom Hayden, and book reviewer John Leonard.

RadioNation is provided with an uplink to any station wishing to air it via a taxpayer-funded National Public Radio satellite transponder. The program is available at no cost to stations that air it unedited and uninterrupted, complete with plugs for The Nation magazine and for related revenue-generating enterprises such as Nation Books. The show currently airs on more than 130 stations in the U.S. and Canada, including outlets in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Tampa, Atlanta, Seattle, New Orleans and Indianapolis. RadioNation can also be heard in more than 100 countries through Radio for Peace International, a shortwave radio station based in Costa Rica.

RadioNation is described on its website as providing “the real story on domestic and international politics as well as literature, art, film, music, TV and cyberspace.” Interviewed guests include Barbara Ehrenreich, best-selling author and Vice Chairwoman of the Democratic Socialists of America (a group closely allied to the Democratic Party’s Progressive Caucus in Congress), Jesse Jackson, Ralph Nader, Randall Robinson, socialist Congressman Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), and Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D.-California).
