A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Sara Nelson worked with American Documentary Films of New York & San Francisco and spent some time as a cable news anchor before becoming labor committee chair of the National Organization for Women (NOW). In the mid- to late 1970s, Nelson and a number of fellow NOW activists spearheaded a campaign to draw national attention to the death of union activist and nuclear power plant worker Karen Silkwood. For details of that case, click here.

In 1980, Nelson co-founded the Christic Institute along with Rev. William J. Davis and Daniel Sheehan (whom she would later marry) and became the organization's executive director.

In 1999, Nelson served as executive director of the Mikhail Gorbachev Foundation's “State of the World Forum,” which brought together hundreds of prominent international figures dedicated to “creating a more sustainable global culture.” A George Soros-supported endeavor where anti-American rhetoric was rampant, this Forum also demanded that the United Nations be given an expanded role in coordinating global governance.

Today Nelson is vice president and executive director of the Romero Institute, an organization that uses legal consulting, litigation, and public education to address “structural sources of injustice” in American society.
