Jim Long is the leader of San Francisco’s chapter of Veterans for Peace, which describes itself as “a non-profit . . . educational and humanitarian organization dedicated to the abolishment of war.” VFP is an official Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) represented at the United Nations. Its founders created the group in July 1985 because they “were disturbed by the militancy of the United States and its violent intervention in the affairs of other nations.” He has been a guest speaker at numerous anti-war rallies sponsored by International ANSWER, a Marxist-Leninist front group. He is also a strong supporter of Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro. During his address at one anti-war rally, Long told the listening audience about a rally he had attended in Cuba, where “Castro was loved by his people, in contrast to President Bush, who had to be protected from protesters in a ‘quasi-military’ operation.” [Long did not mention that in Cuba, anyone protesting against Castro could face prison, torture, or a firing squad.] “It’s hard for me to determine where the police state is and where the free state is,” added Long.
