  • Professor at the University of California’s Berkeley campus
  • Vehement critic of Israel and the U.S.

Professor Rebecca Luna Stein teaches in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California’s Berkeley campus. Known as a harsh critic of both Israel and the United States, Stein condemns what she calls “U.S. support for continuing Israeli aggression in the Palestinian territories,” and “Israel’s overwhelming use of force against a largely unarmed population in the West Bank and Gaza.”

“Even as this history of Israeli violence disappears from the U.S. media and the official rhetoric of the Bush administration,” says Stein, “a new, bolder vocabulary of protest and critique has begun to surface within both the U.S. and Israel. In the…editorial page of the New York Times, activists and intellectuals have been granted unprecedented space to link current Israeli policies in the Occupied Territories with the history of apartheid policy in South Africa.”

Stein has given lectures for the Middle East Studies Association (MESA), the principal professional organization for academic scholars whose subject is the Middle East. Though MESA is ostensibly a scholarly, non-political organization, its membership is dominated by anti-American, anti-Israeli leftists who are apologists for terrorism. Each year, MESA holds a conference for its members, at which hundreds of papers are presented and many discussions are held regarding Middle Eastern history and relevant contemporary issues; these conferences are platforms for academics like Stein to air their anti-Israeli views.
