- Former President of the Islamic Assembly of North America
- Described Wahhabism as “a purification of Islam.”
Born in 1959, the Saudi-born Mohammed Alahmari is the former President of the Islamic Assembly of North America (IANA). Shortly after 9/11, Alahmari came under scrutiny when his name appeared on a list of people who the FBI sought to question in connection with the terrorist attacks. Alahmari has described Wahhabism, the extreme fundamentalist view of the Muslim faith, as “a purification of Islam.”
In an October 2001 New York Times article, Alahmari was quoted saying that approximately half of IANA's funding came from the Saudi government, and that the rest came from private donors, most of whom were Saudis.
