Overview

* Spokesman for the Arab American Institute
* Believes that Arab Americans are being deprived of their civil liberties by the U.S. government

Jean Abi Nader is a spokesman for the Arab American Institute (AAI) who has complained that, in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Arab Americans, as a group, have been unjustly deprived of their civil liberties. For this alleged turn of events, the AAI blames what it calls Attorney General John Ashcroft’s “reign of terror.” “Since 9/11,” says Nader, “Arab-Americans have watched their dream of being fully a part of American society subject to the stresses of federal initiatives — new laws, policies and procedures — that produce fear and intimidation in their community.” “Being an Arab,” he adds, “has become a liability in this country. We are being told, essentially, that we are not good enough. . . . The civil liberties of Arab-Americans and American Muslims came under attack, and we have been treated increasingly as second-class citizens in this country.”
